Uncovering the Secrets of Indian Key

Published October 22nd, 2024 by KeyZ Charters

KeyZ Charters loves sharing the hidden treasures of the Florida Keys. One of our favorite spots is Indian Key, a small 11-acre island with a big story to tell. Once a thriving community, it now stands as a ghost town, waiting for curious visitors to explore its fascinating history.

The Rise of Indian Key

In the early 1800s, Indian Key became a crucial stop for ships navigating the Florida Straits. Its natural deep-water harbor made it perfect for supplying passing ships, salvaging goods from nearby shipwrecks, and trading with local Native Americans. Under Jacob Housman's leadership, by 1830, this tiny island had blossomed into a prosperous community of over 50 permanent residents.

Life on Indian Key

Despite its size, Indian Key was surprisingly well-equipped. Residents enjoyed amenities like a general store, post office, hotel, and even a bowling alley. Fresh water came from cisterns, and the economy thrived on salvage operations. It's amazing to think about how much life was packed into such a small space!

The Tragic End of Indian Key's Golden Age

Sadly, Indian Key's prosperity was short-lived. On August 7, 1840, a Seminole Indian attack, part of the Second Seminole War, brought an abrupt end to the island's golden age. Several residents lost their lives, most buildings were destroyed, and Indian Key's days as a major settlement came to a close.
